THE TEAM
Our mission - To ensure that everyone living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, a J-pouch or stoma has access to evidence-based nutrition guidance so they can feel confident with food and live well with their condition.
Clemmie Oliver
Founder and IBD Specialist NutritionIST
Clemmie is a Registered Associate Nutritionist (MSc, ANutr) and Qualified Nutritional Therapist (DipION, mBANT, CNHC) with over seven years of experience working privately in the UK and internationally with people living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
She regularly speaks on the topic of IBD nutrition for organisations in the UK and globally, and works with a number of IBD charities and companies as a nutrition advisor. Clemmie has also carried out research in IBD with the University of Aberdeen.
Clemmie’s passion for supporting people with IBD is deeply personal. She was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at the age of nine, lived with an ileostomy for seven years, and has had a J-pouch since 2009. She was also diagnosed with IBS in 2014. Her own experiences, and the lack of nutrition support available during her journey, inspired her to dedicate her career to helping others access the guidance she wished had been available to her. You can read more about Clemmie’s journey here.
In 2018, Clemmie founded The Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine Clinic with the goal of improving the quality of life for people living with Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, J-Pouches and stomas. Together with her team, she is passionate about empowering patients with evidence-based nutrition support that brings clarity around diet and IBD, reduces fear around food, optimises nutritional intake and supports symptom management.
Clemmie and her team also act as patient advocates, helping individuals navigate their care and ensuring they are receiving the support they need from the wider medical community.
Outside of her work, Clemmie enjoys spending time with her family and staying active. She is happiest when exploring the outdoors, particularly hiking and climbing mountains in the Highlands of Scotland.
Jess Upton
registered specialist gastroenterology Dietitian
Jess is an HCPC registered, highly specialist gastroenterology Dietitian. She has over 11 years experience working as a Dietitian in the NHS and Private sector both in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
She has a specialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), having published a research paper in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition entitled ‘Nutritional Status and Anthropometry in Children with IBD’, and also working clinically with clients. Jess also has significant respect and empathy for clients with IBD, having had the disease herself for the past 24 years. She has personal experience of IBD medications and surgery, and now lives with a permanent ileostomy (stoma). Jess is therefore able to offer both professional nutrition support, and a compassionate understanding to clients seeking IBD support and those living with a stoma.
Jess believes that nutrition plays a significant role in the IBD puzzle and takes pride in supporting clients with evidence-based, tailored advice to enable them to thrive from symptom relief and witness a significant improvement in their quality of life. Jess has experience working with clients requiring Enteral Nutrition and the Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet and also has experience with other IBD complications such as Bile Acid Malabsorption.
Jess is incredibly passionate about empowering clients with IBD to take back control over what many view as a life sentence illness by helping to optimise nutritional intake, support symptom management, and ultimately improve their quality of life.
Outside of being a Dietitian, Jess is a keen sportsperson, racing both road and mountain bikes, and playing competitive tennis; trying to show that having IBD and a stoma doesn’t have to stop people living life to the full!
NB: Jess is currently not taking on new patients but continues to work on projects with us behind the scenes to support IBD patients.
