The short answer is, no, there is currently no cure for Crohns and Colitis. However, there are many treatment and management options available.

Treatment ranges from drugs to surgery and the options depend on how severe your symptoms are, and how much of your gut is affected. The drugs used may vary during treatment depending on whether you are in remission or having a flare up. Many of the drugs used to help control IBD are anti-inflammatory drugs. These include steroids, immunosuppressants, and biological drugs.

Diet and lifestyle can play a huge role in Crohns and Colitis symptoms. Whilst drugs and surgery are important in treating flare ups and helping keep you in remission, the food you eat and your lifestyle can also have a big impact and should be a big focus alongside any drug treatment to support your body. Many sufferers find making small changes to their diet and lifestyle can really help to improve their symptoms and quality of life. This is something I see all the time in my clinic and it is why I love my job so much! Everyone is unique which is why it is so important to seek help from a registered nutrition practitioner before making any changes to your diet to make sure you are doing it in a safe way and a way that is going to help you the most.
