Thinking of buying Nutrition Supplements? Read these Four Tips first
Before you buy a new supplement, ensure that you’re making an informed choice and that you are not wasting your money. These four tips can help you with this:
Tip 1: Check the Ingredients List
This will be on the product webpage or on the back of the packet.
Try to avoid products with lots of fillers, artificial dyes, or unknown chemicals - particularly look out for and avoid titanium dioxide, carrageenan, carboxymethycellulose (CMC) and polysorbate-80.
Tip 2: Look for Third-Party Testing or Professionally Formulated
Ideally, we want to look for products which have been third party tested by independent laboratories for purity and safety. However, this is an expensive process so some smaller good quality products may not be able to afford to do this.
So, in the absence of this, the second thing to look for is supplements that have been formulated by a reputable nutrition professional (Dietitian or Registered Nutritionist).
Tip 3: Watch Out for Claims That Sound Too Good
If it promises to “cure your IBD” or be a substitute for medication, it’s likely a scam.
Also watch out for people selling products that claim have ‘cured’ their IBD.
Tip 4: Know What YOU Need (if anything!)
Not everyone needs supplements and, if you do need them, your needs will be unique based on your diet, your IBD type and whether you are in a flare or remission.
Get blood tests done and speak to an IBD specialist nutritionist or dietitian before buying to ensure you are not wasting your money or putting yourself at risk.
