"Diet Doesn't Matter": Myth in IBD Care
It’s time to end the “Diet Doesn’t Matter” Myth in IBD care.
I can't believe I’m still meeting IBD patients who’ve been told that diet has nothing to do with their disease.
Despite the significant advancements in diet and IBD research over the past decade and common sense (diet matters to everyone!), too many patients are being told diet doesn't matter in IBD.
I am so passionate about educating and empowering patients and healthcare providers on the connection between diet and IBD and I wanted to share with you today a list of the most common reasons why diet and nutrition are vital to IBD management. So next time you are told diet doesn't matter you can refer to these!:
Correct malnutrition and prevent or address nutrient deficiencies - Malnutrition prolongs disease activity, delays wound healing, and increases hospitalisations and complications in IBD.
Improve symptoms - As a patient this is often our main goal so we can have a better quality of life.
Avoid or reduce the need for steroids - e.g. in Crohns Disease a liquid diet is used instead of steroids in children and increasingly so in adults too.
Improve effectiveness of IBD medications - Research shows the combination of diet and medication can be incredibly positive.
Avoid or delay surgery - A goal for many patients seeking non-invasive management strategies.
Enhance surgical outcomes and reduce complications - Correct pre and post operative care is imperative.
Reduce the risk of bowel obstructions - In people with strictures the correct dietary advice can reduce the risk of serious complications.
Address co-existing conditions - From diabetes to cardiovascular disease, diet helps tackle other health issues.
