Common IBD Nutrition Worries We Hear In Clinic
Common comment we hear in clinic: “I am worried I am not absorbing any nutrients because I have IBD”
Whether or not we should be concerned about this depends on the type of IBD you have and where the inflammation is in your intestines.... Let’s explain more:
Did you know that the majority of nutrients are absorbed in our small intestine? Quick anatomy lesson:
Why is this important?
If you have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns Colitis which only affects the large intestine (colon), then nutrient absorption is usually not something to worry about as the part of your bowel that absorbs nutrients (the small intestine) is healthy.
If you have Crohns in your small intestine we need to give more consideration to nutrient absorption:
Firstly, it is important we understand where the inflammation is in your small intestine and what nutrients you may struggle to absorb enough of as a result.
Once we know this, we can make sure we support you properly to reduce your risk of nutrient deficiencies.
Which nutrients are absorbed where?
