Did You Know? It is Possible to have IBS and IBD

What is IBS?

Not to be confused with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the digestive system.

It is estimated that around 5–20% of the population have IBS but as many people with symptoms do not seek medical advice this may be an underestimate. Several studies have reported a higher prevalence of IBS in females compared to males.

IBS is a functional bowel disorder, meaning symptoms of IBS are not explained by identifiable structural or biochemical abnormalities (like in IBD), but rather by a disturbance of the normal bowel functioning.

IBS is often linked to a disruption in the gut-brain axis, a complex communication network between the brain and the digestive system.

IBS should not be confused with IBD - Here are Similarities and Differences:

Is It Possible to Have IBS & IBD?

Although they are two different conditions, you can have IBD and IBS at the same time.

When in remission, some people with IBD can experience ongoing functional digestive symptoms (like bloating, constipation, diarrhoea) which is often diagnosed as IBS.

Dietary changes can really help to manage symptoms of both IBD and IBS.

Can IBS Cause or Lead to IBD?
No, as IBS is a functional disorder, although symptoms can be very unpleasant and impact our quality of life, IBS usually does not lead to IBD.
